When I was a kid, I loved participating in library summer reading programs. My family went to two different libraries, which meant double the summer reading fun. While my current library does have an adult summer reading program, which is awesome, my siblings and I now live in different areas, so we can't all participate. Thus, I thought it would be fun to do a family summer reading challenge as well. I decided to share the idea here as well in case others are interested in doing something like this with your own family and friends. I've also included a couple summer reading log printables I created that you can use to track which books you've read.
In creating a summer reading challenge, I pulled together my favorite elements from library reading challenges and the Pizza Hut BOOK IT! program I used to do as a kid. Since the goal for my summer reading challenge is fun above all else, I kept the rules simple. They are as follows:
Everyone sets their own summer reading goal.
In order for everyone to get prizes, each participant makes or buys 1-2 small prizes for every other participant.
At the end of the summer, everyone will come together to celebrate with a pizza party. We'll be doing make your own pizzas because of dietary restrictions, but you could just order pizza as well.
Since the primary goal is fun, everyone receives their prizes regardless of how many books they read over the summer.
I also put together a couple of summer reading log printables for a fun and easy way for people to track their reading. Each printable has space for 20 books. I have two versions: one with star ratings and one without. Click on your preferred template below to download.
